Children’s Shoe Size Conversion: Australia vs UK, USA, EU & Asia

Buying shoes for little ones can be tricky enough when their feet seem to grow overnight – but add in international sizing differences, and it can get confusing fast! Whether you’re shopping online, buying preloved shoes, or picking up a pair while travelling overseas, knowing how children’s shoe sizes compare across Australia, the UK, USA, EU, and Asia will save you from sizing slip-ups.

How Does Children’s Shoe Sizing Work in Australia?

In Australia, children’s shoe sizing generally follows the UK system. This means that an Australian children’s shoe size 7 is the same as a UK size 7. If you’re buying shoes locally, that makes things easy. But if you’re shopping from overseas brands or preloved sellers, you’ll often see US, EU, or Asian sizes listed instead.

UK vs USA Children’s Shoe Sizes

The UK and Australia use the same sizing system, but the USA is usually one size larger for the same foot length.

  • Example: a UK/AU size 7 = a US size 8 (children’s).

EU Children’s Shoe Sizes

European (EU) sizes are based on the length of the foot in centimetres. They don’t align neatly with UK/US/AU sizes, which is why you’ll often see conversion charts.

  • Example: a UK/AU size 7 (approx. 14.5cm foot length) = EU size 24.

Asian Children’s Shoe Sizes

In many parts of Asia (including Japan), children’s shoe sizes are measured directly in millimetres (mm). This can actually be the simplest system, as you just measure your child’s foot.

  • Example: a 145mm foot = Japanese size 145.

Tips for Choosing the Right Size

  • Measure both feet – kids’ feet are often slightly different lengths.
  • Add growing room – around 1cm is ideal.
  • Check the brand’s size chart – sizing can vary, especially in fast fashion vs quality shoe brands.
  • Buy preloved with confidence – knowing conversions helps you shop secondhand shoes from overseas brands without stress.
